Press Release No.282                                                                            Dt.  30.06.05

NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC

The CMWSSB is maintaining the City Water Supply through pipe line on alternate days by conveying the treated water from various sources viz. the storage available in Poondi, Cholavaram and Redhills lakes, extraction of ground water from Wellfields in Poondi, Tamaraipakkam, Flood plains, Kannigaipair, Panjetty and Minjur, water received from Veeranam tank under the New Veeranam Project.

As on 29.06.2005, the combined storage in Poondi, Cholavaram and Redhills is 1239 Mcft and the storage in Veeranam lake is 474 Mcft.   There was no appreciable rain during the summer months except some intense rain in April 2004 in the Veeranam Tank catchment area. With the available storage in the lakes including Veeranam Tank and by utilizing the ground water extracted from the Wellfields the Board has programmed to continue the present supply rate of 680 ML through the pipe lines on alternate days, which includes 60 to 65 ML supplied through mobile tankers for filling the stationary tanks and for making street supplies where the water is not reaching through pipe line till September 2005 anticipating rains during Northeast monsoon. The public are requested to co-operate with the Metro Water maintaining the present supply levels by ensuring that water is not wasted any where.

In this connection, kind attention of the public is invited to some of the news items published on wastage of water through hand pumps nearer to the Water Distribution Stations where the water is flowing freely due to the availability of sufficient pressure. Metro Water has taken precautionary action of providing control valves in the public pumps used especially in the slum tenements and slum areas to control the flow of water through the public fountains and close the valves to avoid wastage of water, after the public getting their required water. Public / consumers are hereby requested to use treated water, supplied through pipe line as well as through mobile tankers judiciously for the essential purposes like drinking and cooking and use local well water or water received from India Mark-II pumps wherever available for the other uses. Also the public are requested to avoid wastage of water through the Public fountains, especially where the water is flowing freely, by regulating the control valves provided in the Public Fountain and by closing the valves immediately after the usage of water.

Public are further requested to carry out the maintenance work to the rainwater harvesting structures already provided in their residential buildings so that it will be useful for harvesting the rain water as and when it rains and thereby help the recharge of the acquifer.
