STATUS REPORT ON THE PROPOSED 100 MLD CAPACITY SEA WATER DESALINATION PLANT AT NEMMELI, CHENNAI.
Having regard to the long term drinking water requirements of the growing Chennai City which is expanding rapidly, another 100 mld desalination plant is proposed to be set up at Nemmeli on East Coast Road, south of Chennai.
An extent of 40.05 acres have been selected at Nemmeli village for construction of the plant.
M/s.Mecon Ltd. ( a Government of India Enterprises) along with M/s Adeco Technologies, Switzerland were selected as consultants for preparation of the detailed project report (DPR) and they have submitted the DPR in January 2008.
The estimated cost of the desalination plant and the associated infrastructure such as pipe line for conveyance of product water from the plant to the city distribution system, construction of Under Ground Tank and pumping station is Rs. 993.83 crore.
The detailed project report (DPR) was presented to the Ministry of Urban Development, Government of India on 05.02.2008 seeking sanction of the project under full grant from Government of India.
The Union Government, in its Budget, has allocated Rs 300/- crore as its support for this project to start with.
