Water & Sewerage Tax - Water Supply & Sewerage Service Charges – Tariff – Procedure for Levy and Collection
TARIFF PROCEDURE FOR LEVY AND COLLECTION.
As empowered under Section 34 and 35 of Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Act 1978 the Board shall levy water and sewerage tax on premises situated within Metropolitan Area for exclusively allowing to the attending to the growing needs of and for planned development of water and sewerage services, for the protection of public health.
The water and sewerage tax is a component of property tax levied at 7% per annum on the annual rental value as fixed by the Corporation of Chennai (i.e. water tax @ 1.5%and sewerage tax @ 5.5%) The half yearly tax is 3.5%.
The 1st half year water and sewerage tax shall be payable on or before 30th August and the 2nd half year tax is payable by 28th February of every year.
The half years water and sewerage levied by the Board, if not paid within the above stipulated period, would attract surcharge on recurring basis as per Sec.81 2 (j) of CMWSS Act 1978.
WATER SUPPLY AND SEWERAGE SERVICE CHARGES
In pursuance of the provision under Sec.44,45,47,49 and 51 and under the powers conferred by clause (j) and sub sec.(2) of Sec.81 of CMWSS Act 1978 (Tamil Nadu Act 28 of 1978) The Board has empowered for levy and collection of water supply and sewerage service charges from the consumers who have supplied with water from the source maintained and operated by the Board and from ground water sources. The Board has got autonomy for levy and collection of water supply and sewerage service charges as per G.O.Ms.No.75, M.A.&W.S. Dept., Dt. 08.05.1998.
i. Water supply charges are levied and collected as per classification by the Board from the consumers who are having water connection, under Sec.44 & 47 of CMWSS Act 1978.
ii. Where there is no water connection, but only sewer connection, sewerage service charges are being collected as per Sec.47 (5) of CMWSS Act 1978.
iii. Water supply and sewerage service charges are not collected from the consumer who do not have both these connections.
SURCHARGE
Water & sewerage tax/water supply charges/Sewerage service charges should be paid before the 31st of August and 28th of February for I & II half years respectively to avoid surcharge.
Belated payment of water & sewerage tax and other than domestic category water supply charges & sewerage service charges would attract surcharge at 2% per month and domestic category water supply charges at 1.5% per month on recurring basis upto 31.03.2003 and at 1.25% per month on recurring basis for all categories of consumers from 01.04.2003, as per Sec.81(2) j of CMWSS Act 1978.

For the metered connection, the payment should be made every month.
For the unmetered connection, the payment should be made once in half year commencing from April to Sept. and October to March.
