| As per
the master plan, the Chennai has been divided into 16 zones.
In order to ensure equitable distribution of water, each zone has
been provided with Water Distribution Station, a local network of
Water Distribution mains.
(i) Consequent to the strengthening of distribution system pipelines in the 11 zones, Viz, Ekaduthangal, Patel Nagar, Kanappar Thidal, Vysarpadi, Kolathur, Choolaimedu, Valluvarkottam, Nandanam, Mylapore, Pallipattu and Velachery were taken up under the Second Chennai Project, The piped water supply availability has been increased resulting in reduction in defective streets. Prior to the project the number of defective streets was 12529 and the same was reduced to 1882 streets after completion of project. (ii) Construction of new Water Distribution Stations has reduced the radius of areas served by the water distribution station. This resulted in increased piped water supply availability.
(iii) The service level has been improved with the increased pressure in the mains. (iv) The level of unaccounted for water has been reduced from 35% to 11% resulting in additional water availability to the citizens due to the Leak Detection and rectification works taken up in various parts of Chennai city involving renewal of 1.95 lakh House Service connections & 585 km of Choked up distribution mains.
(v) The Kilpauk Water Treatment Plant located at the heart of the city was constructed in the year 1914 with slow sand filters. To meet the demand of the increased population, the treatment capacity was increased by providing rapid gravity filters of 45 MLD (Million Litres per day) in 1955, 135 MLD in 1965 and 90 MLD in 1991. The Water Treatment Plant was refurbished under the Second Chennai Project. The refurbished plant has several new features such as chemical dose optimization, water quality monitoring, simplified operational control and staged automisation.
