 Introduction

Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply And Sewerage Board (Metro Water) has grown from a government dependent entity to a dynamic, consumer oriented demand driven, Water utility, backed by a highly autonomous operational, environmental and stable financial strength. This growth had been possible due to a committed, competent, and result oriented management.

The quality Assurance Group of the World Bank has rightly stated that the "Madras Water Board" was the best utility visited by them in South Asia. Realising the need to consolidate the gains achieved in the areas of operational practices, consumer orientation, technical competence and managerial efficiency and for effectively utilising them for the future, a centre for extension and excellence called "Resource Centre" has been created.

The Resource Centre has been imparting training to its staff covering all the categories including field works for more than two decades the orientation was mainly in the direction of improving the operational practices.  A reorientation towards managerial aspects were considered necessary and accordingly the staff training activities were restructured.


Objectives…

The objectives of this centre is to assist in providing inputs and information needed for efficiently operating a water utility to the best of the satisfaction of its customer. The Resource Centre is designed to

a) Provide cost effective solutions backed by appropriate technology

b) Provide timely, reliable data for use in the formulation of plans, projects and operational strategy

c) Carry out research in the fields of water supply and sanitation

d) Develop human resources, system and strategy to increase productivity and enhanced efficiency


TRAINING CENTRE

Chennai Metro Water had established a full-fledged staff-training centre as early as 1979 to cater to the growing needs of all categories of employees.

Chennai Metro Water Training Centre has been imparting training to its staff covering all the categories including field workers. Training activities are structured on operational practices and managerial aspects.

The board officers are deputed to attend seminars and training programmes conducted by other organisations in  India and abroad.  Employees are also encouraged to pursue graduate or postgraduate programmes.  As a part of the human resource development, department tests, appreciation and awards, are also extended to achieve increased productivity and efficiency for originational success.

 

IN-HOUSE TRAINING PROGRAM
 

Employees including technical, administrative, finance and field workers are trained in courses related to finance, commerce, administration, engineering, operation and maintenance.

Twenty six modules in categories like Technical,  Human Resourse Management and finance are offered annually. New topics such as leakage control, rain water harvesting, water conservation, water quality, human resource development, project management and financial management have been introduced.

The centre provides training for all categories of personnel in the water and sanitation sector covering supervisory, technical, financial and managerial functions besides, providing skills training to unskilled workers.


TRAINING PROGRAM FOR OTHER INSTITUTIONS:  
The training centre enjoys enormous respect and patronage from educational institutions, state and central government agencies. Exclusive courses are also conducted based on request.  Awareness programmes on Rain Water Harvesting are conducted for board staff, NGO's and general public.
TRAINING PROGRAMES SPONSORED BY CPHEEO

Recognising the need for specialised training in the field of Public Health Engineering, the Central Public Health Environmental Engineering Organization (CPHEEO), Ministry of urban Development, Govt of India is conducting sponsorship refresher courses on various topics related to public health for more than 20 years.  59 Training courses are being conducted by CPHEEO for all the public health departments in India.Out of this, 5 training courses are conducted in Metro Water training centre every year.  The participants of other public utilities from all over India are participating and getting trained from the level of Assistant / Junior Engineer to Superintending Engineer cadre in these courses.

The topics covered in Metro water Training Centre are
1. Sewage Works Supervisors.
2. Care and use of Chlorinators.
3. Corrosion Control.
4. Filter Operations.
5. Laying of Water mains and Sewer mains

The centre is operating from a sprawling campus located about 5 Km away from the railway station.

It has Well equipped air - conditioned Class Rooms (3 Nos.)

Training Laboratory for Water Analysis
Pipe Laying Workshop
Library and Internet Facilities
Comfortable on-campus lodging arrangements on single occupancy basis.
Hostel facilities are also available at Training Centre. (22 Rooms)
