CHENNAI WATER SUPPLY AUGMENTATION PROJECT - I

1. The Tamil Nadu Government had accorded administrative sanction at an estimated cost of Rs.720.00 Crore to implement the Chennai Water Supply Augmentation Project-I by Metrowater. (G.O.Ms. No. 105, MA & WS Dept., dt 9.8.2001).

2. The proposal is to draw 190MLD raw water from Veeranam Lake in Cuddalore District situated about 230km. south of Chennai, treat the raw water, convey 180 MLD treated water and distribute it to Chennai city.

3. The project has been divided into five packages as follows and implemented after settling the contracts.

a)Package I: Construction of Raw water Intake arrangement and Raw Water Pumping Station at Sethiathope (190 MLD) and Treated Water Pumping Station at Vadakuthu (180 MLD) and allied works including replacement of mechanical and electrical equipments, rehabilitation of existing structures, providing Telemetry System for the whole project.

b) Package II: Rehabilitation of existing Water Treatment Plant at Vadakuthu (180 MLD) including replacement of electrical, mechanical equipments.

c) Package III: Supply and laying of Raw water transmission main of size 1775 mm dia Mild Steel (MS) pipes for a length of about 20 km. from Sethiathope to Water Treatment Plant at Vadakuthu, supply and laying of clear water transmission main from Vadakuthu to Break Pressure Tank of size 1750 mm dia MS pipe for a length of about 8km. and 1875mm dia M.S pipes from Break Pressure Tank to Ongur river for a length of about 86km. including construction of Break Presure Tank, supply & providing necessary appurtenances in the pipe line.

d) Package IV: Supply and laying of clear water transmission main of size 1875 mm dia Mild Steel (MS) pipes for a length of about 94 km. from Ongur river to Vandalur, supply and laying of clear water transmission main from Vandalur to Porur of size 1500 mm dia MS pipes for a length of about 20km, supply & providing necessary appurtenances in the pipeline.

e) Package V: Design build, operate Water Distribution Station which includes construction of underground tank, pump house, installation of pump sets and allied pipe laying works and supply, laying of 1500mm dia. M.S. pipe for a  length of about 1.50 km. at Porur and interconnection with existing 1500mm dia. M.S. pipe line for distribution of 180 MLD water.

Commissioning of the Project

The project works completed on a war footing in a record time of 18 months considering the severe drought facing Chennai City. The execution works were completed.

 

    1. Treated Water Conveying main of 208 km. length from Vadakuthu to Porur completed in April 2004.
    2. Trial operation and flushing of the Treated Water Conveying main commenced on 15.4.2004 by using the Bore Well water from Neyveli Aquifer executed under Drought Contingency Plan. The treated water conveying main was in use from 31.5.2004 for conveying ground water from Neyveli Aquifer to Chennai City.
    3. Pumping of water from Veeranam Lake commenced on 20.9.2004. After trial operation designed quantity was pumped from 13.10.2004.
    4. The designed quantity of 190 mld of water is pumped from Veeranam Lake and 180 mld treated water is distributed to Chennai City which is the major share for the piped water supply on alternate days with effect from 13.10.2004 afternoon.
    5. Operation and Maintenance of all the packages was started form 19.01.2005.
