ARANIAR
KORATALAIAR
AQUIFER STUDY:
United Nations Development programme (UNDP) and Water Resource Organisation ( WRO) have studied the Araniar- Korataliar basin and estimated that the ground water potential to the tune of 350 million cum meter/year and 594 million cum meter/year is available respectively. As Araniar-Koratalaiar basin is a nearer source to the Chennai City, and currently about 100 mld of ground water is drawn from this basin and supplied to city, it is felt that it is worthwhile to assess the sustainable yield from the basin. Hence, a consultancy studies has been taken up under the Second Chennai Project. The work has been awarded to M/s Knight Piesold Ltd. on 22.4.2002 and the work was completed on September 2006.
The Consultancy work comprises of two Phases. Phase I includes hydro geological investigation in A.K. Basin to establish the dependable/sustainable yield. The study period is 10 months.
The Phase II includes Presentation of a proposal for introducing Transferable Water Rights in the A.K. Aquifer. This proposal will include a review of International experience in establishing and managing a rights based system in Tamil Nadu and a detailed costed plan of action for introducing such a system in the A.K. aquifer. The period of study is 8 months.
